Press Release April 19, 2013 11:10 AM
The Helena Fire departments will be conducting annual fire hydrant maintenance
and testing weekdays between 8 a.m.-5 p.m., from April 15-July 31. Hydrant
testing helps ensure maximum operability and is required by The National
Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and the Insurance Services Office
(ISO), which helps determine homeowner insurance rates.
Residents may notice water discoloration during, and for a short time following,
the hydrant testing. This is caused by fine amounts of sediment that naturally
occurs being flushed out of the water main lines. It is generally not harmful, and
the water will return to normal shortly after the testing. If you notice a
discoloration we recommend running cold water for five minutes, this should
allow all of the sediment to clear from the line.. We apologize for any
inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for your patience as we continue our
efforts to ensure quality fire protection for the City of Helena.
